A New World

A New World

I believe people come into our lives on purpose. They cross our paths with purpose. Each brings something for us ~ some lesson or opportunity to crack open something new within us.

Our six month Soul Sisters Journey comes to an end this month. We meet one last time during the warmth of June to acknowledge the journey we’ve traveled together and the rich gifts we’ve received because of our collective contribution.

Fool Me Not

Forgive, O Lord, my little jokes on Thee.
And I’ll forgive Thy great big one on me.
— Robert Frost

How did April Fool’s Day get established? There are two basic explanations…

One is that April 1st was a celebration of the season’s shift from Winter to Spring. The other was the adoption of a new calendar requested by Pope George VIII to move New Year’s Day from April 1st to January 1st.

Perhaps our international collective perpetuates the celebration of this day. It supports mischief and playfulness while granting immunity from reprimand by authority.

I remember pulling pranks and tricking others as a kid.  Short sheeting a bed, pushing someones nose to smell the ice cream or relaying a story that was sensationally untrue. These little antics seemed harmless enough… yet now I am not so sure.

Fool is a word that can be used as both noun and verb. There are 88 other nouns for fool in my Thesaurus. Nitwit, chump, numbskull are just a few. All of them are some variation of derogatory.

Using the term fool as a verb demonstrates actions taken to deceive, trick, mislead or dupe.  Deluding another, interfering, cheating, pretending, faking and swindling are all fooling activities.

There’s a memory I have of one kid hurting his back when another pulled his chair away just as he sat down. Or the time when some older kids tricked another into “looking foolish” and how we all laughed at his misery.  Even the kid that was made a fool of laughed.

Nobody really likes to be acknowledged as a person who acts unwisely or is duped.  No one truly enjoys feeling embarrassed or mocked.  These days it seems that the fooling has morphed into a source of harassment or bullying.

Even the smallest sarcasm used in our every day fooling around can be a form of ridicule or mockery.

Ultimately in the end the joke is always on us. What we do onto others, we do onto ourselves!

Today let’s make a decision to bring the fun and playfulness back into our celebration of April Fool’s Day. Let’s agree to be mindful of others feelings and to be conscious of our intention.

Happy April Fool’s Day.

How could you play an April Fool’s joke that gives someone a loving benefit as a result?

The Fortune in Friendship

Each friend represents a world in us, a world not born until they arrive; and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born!
— Anais Nin

Isn’t it amazing how with over 7 billion people on planet Earth we can all come together on a single shared journey? Along the way, we are fortunate to cross paths with those special people we call friends. Can you think of a friend who has brought fortune into your Life?

As I reflect upon my Life, I see that my experiences have been enriched by the people I’ve met along the way.

One of my childhood friendships spans over 55 years of memories, shared adventures, & Life events. From kindergarten to becoming Grandmothers, my friend & I continue to celebrate our bond of mutual affection! We know a world that birthed our mischievous antics as kids, as well as, our love affair with horses.

There were those special friends who navigated high school with me. Through the challenges of adolescence and the adventures of defining ourselves with our place in the world, we thought we were lost.

It is the serendipity of friendships that stimulate a new culture within us.

The sub-culture of college in the 70’s was a new world. I believe it was one of the most exciting & revolutionary periods of our history. With the influence & encouragement of friends, I leapt blindly into taking risks to experience Life with a fierce new resolve! We rocked the world together rallying to support a cause or nursing a cure.

Each of my friends represents a new world of fortune within me. Each fortune I have received has been unique & priceless.

Probably one of the greatest fortunes I have experienced are the friendships born on my path of sobriety. The world of recovery is a common arena where unlikely companions find support & new hope for their destiny. It is “living in the solution” with others that truly makes the difference.

And in recent years, I recognize those friends who have met me in grief. As we support & allow each other to experience loss & then acceptance, together we find promise of a new world. . .
